Honest Review

Weak Hero Class 1 quickly became one of the standout school-action dramas of 2022 thanks to its solid narrative and meticulous direction. The exceptional performances by the cast, particularly Park Ji-hoon's portrayal of Yeon Si-eun, marked an impressive shift from his previous roles, showcasing his ability to depict a cold and sharp character convincingly.

The drama distinguishes itself through realistic and innovative action scenes rather than glorifying violence. It cleverly emphasizes intelligence and resourcefulness over brute strength, making the underdog victories genuinely satisfying. This unique approach effectively builds tension and offers viewers believable scenarios.

Another significant strength of this drama is its portrayal of friendship and growth amid violence. The evolving relationship between the initially indifferent main characters—Si-eun, Su-ho, and Beom-seok—is deeply moving. Their bond, depicted through meaningful bromance, emphasizes the power of genuine friendship and mutual support.

Character Introductions

Yeon Si-eun – Park Ji-hoon

Yeon Si-eun is a voluntary outsider whose life revolves around studying. Despite his slight build and introverted nature, he defends himself against bullies through exceptional intelligence and strategic use of his surroundings. His quick thinking and knowledge of physics allow him to outwit opponents creatively. Though outwardly cold, he deeply values friendship, and viewers watch him grow emotionally through his interactions with friends.

Ahn Su-ho – Choi Hyun-wook

Ahn Su-ho, known for his straightforward and free-spirited nature, is the school’s top fighter. Though he attends school primarily due to a promise with his grandmother, he stands against injustice and readily helps friends like Si-eun. His impressive fighting skills, derived from his past as an aspiring martial artist, coupled with a reserved yet caring personality, add significant depth to the series. Su-ho’s occasional humor refreshes the tense atmosphere.

Oh Beom-seok – Hong Kyung

Oh Beom-seok is a transfer student struggling with isolation due to his background as the son of a politician and his traumatic past experiences with bullying. Initially timid and anxious, he gradually changes through friendships with Si-eun and Su-ho. His internal struggles with insecurity, loneliness, and familial pressure lead to significant plot twists, eliciting empathy and complexity.

Jeon Seok-dae – Shin Seung-ho

Jeon Seok-dae leads a runaway group, undertaking any task for money. Initially antagonistic towards Si-eun, he begins to question his violent lifestyle. Seok-dae’s intimidating charisma and occasional glimpses of humanity heighten the series' tension, making him a compelling character.

Young-yi – Lee Yeon

Young-yi, a member of the runaway group, demonstrates toughness and resilience in difficult circumstances. Interacting with the main trio inspires her to pursue a more ordinary life, revealing her genuine warmth despite harsh experiences. She becomes increasingly relatable as the story progresses.

Plot Summary

Weak Hero Class 1 follows Yeon Si-eun, a dedicated student who unexpectedly becomes a target of relentless bullying by class bully Jeon Young-bin. Initially enduring quietly, Si-eun eventually fights back using his intelligence and available resources. Assisted by the school's top fighter Ahn Su-ho and transfer student Oh Beom-seok, the trio develops a powerful friendship amid ongoing struggles.

However, their peace is disrupted when Jeon Seok-dae and his boss, Kim Gil-su, enter the scene, complicating matters further. Beom-seok’s unresolved trauma leads him to darker paths, culminating in an unforeseen betrayal. Si-eun’s desperate struggle to protect his friends concludes tragically, resulting in his transfer to a new school, hinting at new challenges to come in a potential second season.

Season 2 Coming to Netflix

Thanks to the immense popularity of Weak Hero Class 1, the second season, Weak Hero Class 2, is set to premiere on Netflix in April 2025. Unlike the first season, which was a Wavve original, Season 2 will be a Netflix original, attracting heightened global anticipation.

Confirmed cast members for Season 2 include Park Ji-hoon, reprising his role, alongside new actors such as Ryeoun, Choi Min-young, Yoo Soo-bin, Bae Na-ra, Lee Min-jae, and Lee Jun-young. Unfortunately, Choi Hyun-wook from Season 1 will not be returning, much to fans' disappointment.

Teaser clips and plot hints suggest Season 2 will explore Yeon Si-eun’s battle against even greater threats at his new school, Eunjang High, fueled by his trauma from failing to protect his friends previously. The introduction of new friends and formidable adversaries, especially a hinted conflict with the powerful organization known as "The Union," promises an even more intense and thrilling narrative.
